How to Meditate

  1. Sit on a cushion or chair facing a window.
  2. Light a candle or incense.
  3. Read a passage from a book (see list of recommendations).
  4. Set your timer on your phone for 10-20 minutes.
  5. Close your eyes.

The mind takes at least 10 minutes to “settle in” so try not to get frustrated or give up. Relax the entire body as you expand the belly while breathing in, and contract the belly while breathing out. Place your hands on the belly or rest your hands on your thighs and turn both palms up. You do not need to know the answer to whatever problem you have. In recovery, our problems don’t necessarily go away, but we no longer create problems about our problems. Meditation helps us heal. All we have to do is sit and ask for guidance.
